ASEAN DAY 2015 - Dramatic Monologue Contest Guidelines

ASEAN Day 2015 is fast approaching and another competition is added to highlight the said event. 

DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE:

A dramatic monologue is an excerpt in a play, poem or story that reveals a character's thoughts and feelings. The story teller is a single person who delivers the speech that makes up the whole story in a specific situation at a critical moment.


OBJECTIVES:

The Dramatic Monologue Competition aims :

1. to develop awareness of other forms of stage and poetic arts.
2. to enhance the English speaking and acting skills of the students.
4. to develop self-confidence through stage performance.


MECHANICS & GUIDELINES:

1. Every participating school must have only one contestant – one (1) Junior High School and must prepare one contest piece. You may or you may not use the pieces attached in the memorandum sent to your respective schools.

2. The contest piece must be in ENGLISH.

3. The contestant will have 2-4 minutes of presentation.

4. The contestant must wear the appropriate costume for the performance. He/She may bring 1 or 2 pieces of props that may be deemed necessary for his/her performance. Backdrops are not allowed.

5. The contest piece must be memorized. No notes or cue cards allowed.

6. The Criteria for Judging are as follows:

·         Acting Skills                                       (40)
-          Characterization                           - 20
-          Use of Voice and Energy Level   - 10
-          Movement, Gesture                      - 5
-          Use of Stage Space                       - 5

·         Story                                                   (40)
-          Language Accuracy                      -10
-          Use of Language                           -10
-          Fluency                                         -10
-          Pronunciation                                -10

·         Stage Presentation                              (20)
-          Costume/Props                              -10
-          Audience Impact                           -10
-           
7. Each participating school must bring 3 copies of the piece on the contest day for the judges’ perusal.

8. Three (3) winners and three (3) honorable mentions will be picked and will be declared by the judging committee. They will receive Certificates of Commendation for winning while the all the contestants and their coaches will receive Certificates of Participation.
