Young aspiring writers undergo Campus Journalism workshops in Phitsanulok


Phitsanulok, THAILAND - Aspiring campus journalists of Phitsanulok Pittayakom School - English Program underwent a two-day training and workshop on Campus Journalism over the weekend, June 10-11, 2017, held at the ASEAN Room of Naresuan Building.

 A total of thirty three (33) students from Grade 9 to 12, most of whom had no background about campus journalism, participated in the workshop which was officially opened by Dr. Manop Ketmek, School Director of Phitsanulok Pittayakom School, in the morning of June 10.

"This is a rare opportunity for you to hone your writing skills," the school director said. "May you take this chance to improve yourself for your future," he added.


For two days, the EP students underwent intensive training with lectures on the following: Editorial Writing with Mr. Nicfranz De Los Reyes, Feature Writing with Mr. John Patrick Benliro, News Writing with Mr. Lorenzo M. Caballes, Jr. and Photojournalism with Mr. Reuben Esteban. 

Mr. De Los Reyes, a Foreign Language Teacher in Phitsanulok Pittayakom School, has a strong background in campus journalism as he was an award winning school paper adviser in Saint Joseph School in IloIlo, Philippines before he decided to move to Thailand. 

Mr. Benliro, a lecturer at Phibulsongkram Rajabahat University in Phitsanulok, is an active blogger at Khon Philippine and is one of the forerunners of The Pinoy Legacy, an online magazine that covers events of the Filipino community in Thailand and around the world.

Mr. Caballes works as the ASEAN Teacher-in-Charge and an EP teacher of Phitsanulok Pittayakom School. His experience as a school paper adviser for six years in the Philippines contributed to his enthusiasm to introduce journalism to Thai students. Before he moved to Thailand, he was awarded as an Outstanding School Paper Adviser of the Philippines in 2010.

Mr. Esteban, a lecturer at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, Phitsanulok Campus, is a photography hobbyist. He graduated with a journalism degree in the Philippines and is maintaining a personal blog where he shares short stories and poetry.


Meanwhile, the participants were also engaged in competition for Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, News Writing and Photojournalism. 

"There were quite a number of things we learned from this workshop, such as how to write a news article," Intouch Wangtrakondee, a Grade 10 student, said. " We also have the chance to learn about headlines, bylines, place lines, leads, bodies and quotations which are all part of a news article," he added.

Ten winners for each category were announced at the end of the training. The top writers were given certificates for winning.

ASEAN Themes and Logos from 2010 to 2015

Every year, ASEAN changes its chairmanship according to the alphabetical order of the English names of the 10 Member States. Whoever assumes the chairmanship shall uphold the responsibilities of hosting the annual ASEAN related summits and council meetings. Phitsanulok Pittayakom School EP students undergo science camp with Canadian scientists

Phitsanulok, Thailand - The English Program students of Phitsanulok Pittayakom School are undergoing a two-day Science Camp at school with Canadian and Filipino scientists.  The camp officially opened early morning today, May 30, at the Chaiyanuphap Hall attended by the school administrators and the EP teachers and staff. Dr. Manop Ketmak, Phitsanulok Pittayakom School director said the camp will help the participants develop their knowledge about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  Addressing the 150 participants from Matayom 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes, the director added "I hope you will take this opportunity to learn as much as you can because this is a rare chance for you to study with international experts."
